I'm a complete newb when it comes to php and am hoping there's a simple solution to this. I did some snooping and it appears that the existing home link has been assigned a variable and that variable has been called upon in the command line.
So I guess I would need to know what file contains the variable so I can change it and is it that simple?
Thank you in advance for your help.

having just managed to install G2, I to would be very keen on getting the answer to the first question.
The group I am setting up the album for are older and may have trouble without a direct link back the home page.
Surely someone has an answer after nearly 4 weeks . Please

There is an answer but so far we have had three different people asking questions none of whom have provided the information needed to determine the details of their installations.
1. Not clear whether the OP is on G2 or G3. Clarification was requested and met with silence.
2. The second poster mentions G3. Doesn't provide full info and in any case, this section of the board is for G2.
3. You mention G2 but provide nothing else.
As a result, anyone trying to answer has to try to guess many things. This is too much hard work so when users do not provide enough information to allow for an answer without psychic ability, their questions tend to get ignored as I am sure you can understand.

considering this is only my 5th post here, and the bulk was on the G3 thread, I think your a bit hard on me to be honest.
It was a fair question, and to me I would have guessed that what I want do would be the same nearly regardless of version.
As I could not get G3 to work, because my host does not support <short tags on>. I am just not sure.
You refer me to a link in regards whats required when I ask help, but looking back at the various topics in the threads, hardly anyone does this?
Are you just picking on me cause I am new???
besides it says
I never started a new topic, just asked the same question someone did 4 weeks ago, so all I am guilty of is bumping the topic

Your best bet for G2 http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:linksinhead
Or you could edit your theme
Or you could use javascript
But as Dayo stated less info is not better.
Like version <- not the same as G2 and G3 are completely different applications that do not share modules, themes ...
Also theme you are using as some offer this as an option.

yes thanks for that Suprsidr. That will be a great help.
It just shows how one can assume something and be wrong.
I just assumed that as is was the gallery 2 forum section, and the only downloadable version I can see for 2 is 2.3.1, I did not need to mention versions, shows how one can get corrupted, as I am a Mod on another forum (UKTS) and get set in our ways.
This gallery is all new to me.

I suppose the tone of the "It has been four weeks" bit led to the retort.
It is often possible to tell what is needed from the context of the question and sometimes given the same context, it is not required. Also, the person asking, based on their knowledge, may know just how much info is needed. The link pretty much asks for everything as it is geared towards people not so familiar with things.
In this specific case, as said, we have had different persons ask different questions and if you look back, clarification on the version was requested but it has so far not been forthcoming.
I apologise for being hard on you but even in your case, despite pointing you to the link that sets out the standard information needed, you have preferred to reply without providing this information and instead argue the point that the OP did not this information (he was asked to ... because it need helpful to the person trying to answer. He did not, hence, 4 weeks later as you say, the question is still unanswered).
There is a reason why the information is needed. It simply makes the life of people trying to answer your questions easier and is therefore in your interest.
Picking bits and bobs from your posts, it appears that you use G2. However, I have no idea what version of G2 you have of the several versions that have been released over the years (many old installations are still in use and users regularly come here to ask questions) and since you, as with those that posted before, seem reluctant to divulge this information, I simply don't know where to start to try to give you an answer.
Please kindly provide the information indicated on the link I posted. Between the two of us, we have, at this point, ended up typing much more than would have been needed to resolve your issue.

OK. As an alternative to the module option, you can try the hack posted on this old thread: http://gallery.menalto.com/node/30964
Scrolling towards the bottom, I see I participated in that back then.
Goodluck with your site!

Ah yes, true but dialog is good, is it not. And thats what forums are for, I got a lot help in the G3 forum when I was trying to install that version, and it was my host that caused the problem, hence the move to G2
Thanks for the links, that should help a great deal

Dialog, is good indeed.
I crossed over to take a look at the G3 side of the forum (makes Sign of the Cross and shudders) and yep, your host is totally out of touch or perhaps stuck in 2004.
From PHP 5.4 (due next year) it will be impossible to disable "<?=" tags. So rather than going away, it is coming on stronger.
Having said that however, I can understand their position as the whole short_tags business is a bit of a mess.
There are three basic forms, "<?=", "<?" and "<%". The latter two are sometime informally called "Shorter Tags" and the last one especially is a nightmare and even the first has issues with XML although the potential benefits in using php directly as a template (instead of Smarty that G2 uses for instance) is considered to outweigh this. Basically you don't have to add another layer to the process.
The first short tag form will essentially become a core part of PHP. ( search for "is now always available regardless" in the PHP5.4 RC2 Release Notes from two weeks ago and I believe the other two will become the new "short_tags" (which should be switched off). However, it is currently not possible to allow the first form only and allowing short_tags at this point means allowing the other two crazy cousins as well.
Anyway, G2 is a capable and, at this point, more flexible and more powerful than G3 so have no fear in installing it.
If you find it lacking, you can always migrate to G3 when your host upgrades to PHP 5.4 ... sometime in 2035 by the look of things
BTW, never, ever, buy more than a three month hosting package at the very most. In fact, you should always only ever buy a monthly plan no matter how good the host currently is or how much of a discount they offer.

yes, Thanks for all that/ I fully agree about the hosting.
This host was not one I picked, its some deal between the non profit group I am involved with and the host company.
Theres very few good cheap hosts available in New Zealand that I know off.
Anyway, The sites up and I have started uploading photos to the G2 gallery.
Can't get the bulk upload via FTP setup for some reason, but I suspect that this is once again something the host has blocked or disabled.
I can upload via FTP, but am unable to get the G2 Admin to recognise this folder to activate the bulk uploads.

yes thanks Suprsidr, I downloaded that module but can not get G2 to show it at all.
I just downloaded, and place the files in the modules folder. have I missed a step?
I am completely new to all this, its been many years since I did webpages etc, I would not be doing this one, if it was not such a good cause.
I checked the admin panel, uploadify does not show in the installed plugins etc

the file structure should be gallery2/modules/

oh, ok yes i must have done something terribily wrong some how, as I do not have that at all.
I downloaded the files (module) from the link on the site you directed me to. However, I actually ended up going to the uploadify website and downloading their plugin, which of course is not what I needed, was it.
See told you I was new to this, just saw the word uploadify and assume that was it, I must learn to read...
Anyway, I have now downloaded the correct files, and once I have done my time in the naughty corner, I shall go try it.
I am off to ukTrainsim to take it out on some the users there, now wheres my Mod hat
cheers

Hello,
Your post says "Anyway, G2 is a capable and, at this point, more flexible and more powerful than G3 so have no fear in installing it." I have G3 which of course I thought would be better and more robust. Is there any reason I should install G2 instead? I am trying to set up a photo sharing site similar to Picasa..
Having real issues...

well Peggydi, I am completely new here, but my impressions was that G3 is the better version (maybe) but as I could not load it due to my host not meeting some of the requirements. ( no fault of Gallery I may add) I could not install and test it.
G2 was the next best thing, and I can't say I regret that move at this time, I got a lot of help and G2 was very easy to install and setup. Apart from my fault of not reading things fully, it was a breeze.
I have it all up and running on http://www.southaucklandzrda.org.nz in the photos section.
I still have some fine tuning to do, but it will be fine till after the festive season.

Thanks for your response. I could not access your website. Does it work with IE 9? Do you need to know php to edit the templates? I have been very frustrated trying to set up the photo sharing site i want. However I like all the modules Gallery has. I just need to learn how to modify the templates and create the links I want.

Hi Peggy,
That statement just represents my opinion (bear in mind I have long term G2 installations in place and not starting from scratch) and if you have installed G3, there is no reason to change it to G2 unless there are specific functions you need from G2 that are currently not present in G3.
You need to bear in mind that G3 is relatively new while G2 is a mature product. However G3 is being actively developed both by the efforts of development team and community input and will continue to grow by leaps and bounds.
The issues involved in setting up a Picasa type site are not trivial no matter what off the shelf application is used as start point. You will need to be comfortable with both PHP and the innards of the specific application although there may be modules that can take you a fair part of the way.
As G2 is more mature than G3 at this point, that's the one I'll be looking at first in your shoes.

sorry peggy, try it without that stray Z, http://www.southaucklandrda.org.nz
UI must say I was surprised just how easy it was to setup G2 and the vast array of plugin modules available.

Thanks...look great. i assume you are experienced with PHP? I am trying to develop a Picasa like photo sharing site where users can upload photos and share with others. I will be working on this over the holidays...May end up using a programmer to help out.

Thanks. i will probably stick with G3 since this is the version my hosting company has made available. Don't want to try installing G2 on my own. I will be looking for a programmer to contract with to get the end product i desire (Picasa like photo sharing site). I do plan to work with G3 and the modules to go as far as I can. Please advise if you know of sites with PHP programmers or if Gallery programmers are allowed to do customizations.
Thanks

You can advertise your "Gallery Programmer" needs in the marketplace forum.
Currently G2 may have more of the feature you would need for "Picasa like" functionality.

I accessed your site..looks good! I also moved to Gallery 2...installation was indeed a breeze. Now I trying to customize. I really like you log in page. How did you do you customization? Did you have an existing website and integrate Gallery 2?

sorry Peggydi, are you talking about my site?
The site was all but done before I did the gallery page, and apart from admin logon there should be no other logon pages. i have not allowed users to post to the site, as by law we have be careful what and who we show on the website.
being non profit and using all volunteers its a balancing act between getting the message out there and not offending or upsetting anyone.
I must admit I got a lot of help and (Dialogue) here from the forums and thanks to Suprsidr the gallery2 integrated very well with what I was trying to do on the website as a whole. I prob would have used Gallery3, as that was my first choice, but due to problems with my host not allowing short tags, I was pointed toward G2, something I must say I will not regret.
It does everything I wanted and more, plus I can add modules to it to expand it should the need arise.
Regards
Peter

I believe she was referring to suprsidr's site.
Nonetheless, you've done a great job with yours notwithstanding that you have only recently been exposed to the application.

ok Thanks. These ponies are for the diabled children to ride. and we do not allow adult riding.
In fact I have never ridden a horse myself.
All our horses are retired/older horses, many saved from heavens knows what, and given a good home.
I would love to work two days a week and get brushed and fed everyday.
I think that gallery2 plus you and Suprsidr are what made my introduction to gallery far easier then it seemed at first.
So thanks.
