upgrading to 3.2... what/where is "var folder"

have decided to dive in and attempt to upgrade my gallery. trying to follow directions but...what and where is var folder?

OK. since the previous post i did see the "var" folder in the new install of 3.2 via the cpanel. but i cannot find it in the older existing (2.2.4 and 2.3.1) installations via ftp. these are the ones i am trying to update but cannot find the var folder in order to move it as per instructions in updating these older installations. " step 5-Copy the var folder from your old folder to the new one " ?

G2 does not have a var folder. You are reading how to upgrade G3, not how to upgrade to G3
There is no upgrade to G3. You can migrate your G2 to G3 http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Modules:g2_import
