Have tried searching the forum but have not found this question before, I hope I am not asking it again. "Fatal error: session_start(): Failed to initialize storage module: user (path: /tmp) in /Volumes/xeon/extraUsers/sea/Sites/houseofart/gallery2/install/index.php on line 74" Have I overlooked something in the installation process? ---- |

the installer requires session support from PHP.. you'll need to get your PHP working correctly.

According to phpinfo() session support is enabled. Is there some specific set up required? If so where can I find this?

what about write permission for the webserver user on /tmp ?

my web root tmp dir was 777, and the root tmp was 700, I then changed this to 777 but still the same error.
Which of these will it be using anyway?

just the /tmp, that's the absolute path and has nothing to do with your webroot. but mindless may be right about your php not being set up correctly for sessions. maybe google can help.

It does seem odd though that I am getting the same error of two different servers. Could it be a problem with the gallery build which I downloaded? It was the beta from sourceforge (earlier today).
I will talk to my hosting people to see what they say about php sessions.

the very same gallery "build" runs successfully on lots of other setups and no1 had the error you describe.

Funnily enough I got the beta today and had problems as well. Although it was a different initial issue, I've since run into version & manifest issues with the nightly builds and a direct, complete checkout from CVS too.

Solved it!
I am running drupal on my site also, and it put in a .htaccess file with the line php_value session.save_handler user
which messes it up, just commenting it out solves it.

I was reacting more to the fact that we'd both used the same version of code and run into problems, that's all.
Anyway, he's sorted now, so it's academic.
(and yes I know it turned out to be environmental, but it wasn't beyond the realms of possibility that there was some relationship between the two issues, especially given the nature of the disparities I'm coming across. It honeslt was just an attempt to corrobate information, I'm not in the habit of nicking someone else's platform to raise awareness of my own problems. ).
