certain images just won't load here, for a few of them I get "error loading image" where the image should be, they all came from the same camera, some are higher resolution than others but that doesn't seem to make a difference ---- |

First, make sure GD is not at the top of the priority for the graphics toolkits.
Beta 4 is getting kind of old and a lot of fixes have happened. Please try upgrading to RC2, then report back here if that fixed the problem or not.
Also, if that doesn't fix the problem, please post your system info and a link to a phpinfo file as described here, http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:faq#What_information_is_required_when_I_ask_for_help_in_the_forums.3F

I updated with CVS last night, it now says it's "+5 insightful"
I moved GD down, but I'm still getting the same error

That's odd, if you updated out of CVS you should've been put onto RC2, code named, kthxbye
I don't know for sure, but you might have some file integrity issues. Please try a recent nightly instead of CVS so we can rule that out:

Oh and backup your files. Just to be sure you theme doesn't get overwritten.

and to your problem: are there any entries in the apache error log?
as it seems, you don't have a php memory limit. maybe it's hitting another limit, e.g. physical memory limit. not very probable though.
got the exif module activated? deactivate it.

I tried CVS again, but I got the same version, is it normal for it to tell you all these files are "in the way"
I downloaded the .zip of the RC2, and uploaded it, and when I accessed it the upgrader was launched, so I went through all the steps, I did notice a WARNING about file integrity! and after that I'm still getting error loading image....
maybe I should just dump everything and install from scratch?

OK now the fresh installation is working fine, thanks for everybody's help

OK so now it's not working fine, an image that was giving me problems before is now working fine, but another one that was not giving me any problems before is now not showing up in the thumbnail cropper, it's giving me "error loading image"
I also looked at the error log as suggested, just a lot of favicon.ico file not found, nothing relating to gallery2, not sure if I'm looking in the right place...

I tried all those suggestions and it still doens't work, I don't expect you to fix it for me, but I though at least you'd like to know about this bug

and i can only repeat myself: a warning for missing / modified files is NOT ok. it means something's wrong either with your archive, with your unarchive program or with the upload.

yeah this is the same thread, isn't it? I got a warning when I tried to upgrade to RC2, so then I just did a clean install and no warnings, but I still have the same problem, only now it's effecting other images, while the ones that were effected before are working fine in crop thumbnail
