"Resize pictures before upload" hangs

After installing Gallery2 I find that I have a problem when trying to upload pictures using the Upload Applet. When I select "Resize pictures before upload", then click the upload button, the window pops up like it is attempting to upload, but nothing actually happens. It just sits there forever (until I click cancel). I also noticed that after upgrading to Gallery2, it takes a lot longer for the Upload Applet to bring up the "Browse" box when I click the "Add Pictures" button (not sure if that's relevant). I have a Gallery1.4 installation on the same host (under a different domain), and it does not experience this "hanging" problem. Any thoughts?
