Main page layout like PGTheme?

Can anyone help me make the required changes to have the author.tpl file sit to the left of the albums on the main page taking approx 30% of the width, but then the matrix theme works for albums and photos? I tried to copy and paste, but I could only manage the author.tpl page appearing on every single album and photo page.

Basically, I like the look of the PGTheme main page, but am happy enough with matrix for everything else.
