Memory issues : cannot turn off extra modules or import G1 albums

I've been trying to import a G1 gallery into a new G2 install (one album at a time) for several days now and I'm having a lot of issues with memory. I attempted to put the php memory increase information in the .htaccess file, but when I put in that line as instructed from the FAQ's, my G2 install throws 500 server errors and I can't access anything. Putting a php.ini file in the /gallery directory to try to increase the memory available does nothing. I had read somewhere to try deactivating unneeded modules during the import process. But now when I'm in the site admin mode and try to get to the modules listing, I get this error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 184320 bytes) in /homepages/32/d107495565/htdocs/lisa/gallery/lib/bbcode/bbcode.class on line 477 I'm just at a loss here. I've upgraded another gallery install in another hosting instance from the same webhost provider (1&1) with no problem, I can't figure out what is going wrong with this one.

An update of the continuing problem from above:
After I deleted the php.ini file I had in the /gallery directory I was able to continue, turn off nearly all the modules, and to import most of the albums. I had to do them all one or two at a time. Everywhere I look within my web server space, it indicates that I have 40MB of memory available. I have read place where people say they can import several thousand photos with only 32MB. I am extrememly frustrated because I have 5 albums left with album counts of between 100-400 photos each and I cannot import any of them. Everytime I try, they freeze up about 1/3 of the way through.
I tried increasing the memory to 128MB with the ini_set("memory_limit","128M"); suggestion from the G2 FAQ, but it didn't help anything.
The ulimit -a command yields the following:

Can anyone who understands those values shed any light on my situation?
I don't know what to do in order to get these last 5 albums imported. Is 375 photos in an album really a ridiculous amount? 162 photos fail as well.
Anyone? Please?

I still can't get this to work. Can anyone suggest anything? I'm really frustrated. There seem to be several people with memory issues but no one is getting any sort of reply.

From your description, it sounds like exactly the same problem I'm having... You wouldn't happen to use 1and1.com for your hosting, would you?
Anyway, I don't have a solution, but thought I would add that it does not appear to be an isolated thing. My post is here: http://gallery.menalto.com/node/51258
I also tried increasing the allowed execution time, but that didn't seem to help either.

Yes, I am using 1and1 for hosting... I need to investigate with them. Thanks for sharing in the troubles!

My 2 cents....I was on G1 with 1and1 and had to leave them because of php issues that they would not change....

interesting. well, i'd leave gallery before I'd leave 1and1, but hopefully it won't come to that. I've been running G1 and G2 on 1and1 for the last 3 years or so, this is the first time I've had any problems.
scottishgoat, I notice that you are also having memory issues, but you're not with 1and1 anymore and you're still experiencing memory problems?

Yep, still having issues....G1 was fine on the new company (phpwebhosting) and then I upgraded to G2 (two weeks ago now?) and have had issues since. A friend with the same company is having issues with his gallery being painfully slow so I'm going to write them and see if it's something going on on their side. The weird thing is that all the pix taken with my old camera migrated just fine...it's all the pix with the new camera (canon) that I'm having issues with. I really do like G2 though....from some limited searching it seems to be the most mature free gallery out there....
Any ideas???

Hey all, just joining in the 1and1 lamenting...
I was/am getting the server400 errors as well with my g2 installation.
I also have it bridged into joomla, which is an awesome option... if you can get it to work.

I was able to get G2 to work fine on its own, but when i turned it on in joomla with too many other components running i started getting the server 400 errors. I did up the memory in the php.ini file and that seemed to get rid of a few of the problems, but it is still not perfect.
My long term plan is to switch to dreamhost, so far i am really impressed with them. The icons on the admin interface are not as pretty as the ones at 1and1, but everything else seems to be a lot better. ImageMagick support alone should get a lot of people to dump 1and1. Dreamhost has a 1 click installer for G2, runs it as a shell script... unpacks the installer in less than a minute! And get this, they will even let you compile your own installation of PHP if you need modules that they don't have in their base install. I have not found a reason to stay with 1and1 yet...
