Is an SSL certificate required for the Java applet to upload?

I just began maintenance work on a PHP application that uses Gallery 1 to upload photos. Each time a user calls the applet it wants to use an SSL, and says the one on the server is expired or does not exist.

I am confused why a certificate would be required to upload photos, and the owner of the site has asked me if there is a way to disable this.

Is that possible?
