The really awsome thing is that you can find a "roadmap" somewhere that lists the features that want to be part of 2.2. You can then check out a nightly snapshot (or use svn) and see all the new features that are currently in and working. This will give you a good idea of how many features are left before 2.2 is ready for beta testing.
But as floridave said, I think it looks like the time table is "soon" because a lot of the feature requests I have voted for have been closed!

I got high hopes.
Do you think it'll spark some more momentum in the module / theme development?

I wouldn't hold your breath. Modules and Themes for G2 have been developing at a pretty steady pace. It takes skilled people who are interested in creating what ever feature/look they are after.
I believe there are some plans to have a theme and/or plugin contest at some far off future date, with some pretty substantial rewards for the top places... but I think I have heard about that for a year or more :p

I'm looking forward to this as well. I've played with a few snapshots and am already impressed with all the new features. I especially like the AJAX stuff in the Plugins area - vey nice
One question about Gallery 2.2, How likely is that Gallery 2.2 could broke some Embedding Solutions?

embedding hasn't changed.
g2.2 is a backwards compatible release, unlike g2.1.
g2.1 changed the API and the embedding API compared to G2.0. we made sure that g2.2 is compatible with g2.1 modules and g2.1 integrations.

- the comment module is available since g2.0.
- additions in g2.2 related to comments are:
* guests can enter a name
* add-comment block which can be placed anywhere, e.g. below photos
- nightly snapshots of g2.2 can be downloaded via the downloads page

Very keen to try out the keyalbum module for potential use on a site being launched early next year. Is the latest svn the one at https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/gallery/branches/DEV_2_2_ajax/ ?
Cheers, James

i'd fetch the latest nightly snapshot of gallery 2.2-svn. it includes the keyalbum module.
note that you need to upgrade your complete gallery to 2.2-svn if you want to use the keyalbum module. it does not work with g2.1.2.

Thanks Valiant. I can only see the above link and https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/gallery/branches/DEV_2_2_downloadable_plugins/ - did you mean that one? They both seem to have the keyalbum module files in them.
