I set up a website at www.fam-scotpics.com last September. I installed and configured the Gallery software, installed the PGTheme and colourpack and it was all working fine. I added images and albums and instructed the client how to use the site.

In January the client contacted me because the site was not working. Apparently he had added some images and now could not get the site on-line. He insists he did nothing apart from add images using the links on the page.

If you try to access the site by www.fam-scotpics.com it eventually comes up with an error message - 'Error 500 - Internal server error. Try again later'. The hosting company seemed unable to help. I reinstalled the Gallery software, still nothing.

Now I am able to get into the site by doing a Google search which produces a link to the checkout page. If I then try to go to the 'home' page I get the server error message. I can, however, login as Admin from the checkout page and am then able to navigate anywhere within the site. It looks to me as though something has been reset to only allow authenticated users (or admin) to view the site. How can I remedy this problem?

Thanks in advance
Mike Davies

please see docs -> troubleshooting -> troubleshooting instructions.

in case of an http status 500, please check the webserver's error log.
FAQ: What is the webserver error log?

I have looked at the current log files on the server using ftp, I assume these are the ones you mean.

The last few entries are :

82.71.25.71 - - [09/Mar/2007:12:06:20 +0100] "GET /main.php?g2_view=core.SiteAdmin&g2_subView=core.AdminMaintenance&g2_navId=x95ee2861 HTTP/1.1" 200 1141 www.fam-scotpics.com "http://www.fam-scotpics.com/main.php?g2_view=core.SiteAdmin&g2_return=main.php&g2_returnName=album" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; FDM)" "-"
82.71.25.71 - - [09/Mar/2007:12:08:00 +0100] "GET /main.php?g2_view=core.UserAdmin&g2_subView=core.UserPreferences&g2_return=main.php%3Fg2_view%3Dcore.SiteAdmin%26g2_itemId%3D7%26g2_navId%3Dx95ee2861&g2_returnName=site+admin&g2_navId=x95ee2861 HTTP/1.1" 200 1211 www.fam-scotpics.com "http://www.fam-scotpics.com/main.php?g2_view=core.SiteAdmin&g2_return=main.php&g2_returnName=album" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; FDM)" "-"
75.126.13.82 - - [09/Mar/2007:12:08:00 +0100] "GET /main.php?g2_itemId=40 HTTP/1.1" 200 92124 fam-scotpics.com "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)" "-"

which don't make a lot of sense to me. I think 82.71.25.71 is me but i don't see any error messages which might help.

Also now whenever i try to access any of the links from the Admin interface I get a 'Security violation The action you attempted is not permitted.' message. This looks like some sort of permissions problem but I have no idea what I need to do.

that's the access log, not the error log.

I am trying to get the error logs from the host company but they are difficult to contact by phone.

Meanwhile the site works perfectly as long as I am logged in as Admin. As soon as I log out I get the internal server error. There is obviously a permissions problem here but I don't know where to change it. Any suggestions welcomed.

Regards,
Mike

I think I may have resolved this issue but not sure why it works.

By chance I found that the site had been inundated with comments, several 100s, all spam. I started to delete them but it was too slow. I disabled the commenting facility instead and now the site seems to be working again.

Mike
