I recently installed Vista on my laptop (ugh... POS). If I go to open GR 1.5.1 b18 or later, I see a empty window frame and then slowly watch the window build itself. It starts at the lower left corner and works at an angle towards the top. It does about 1 row of pixels a second.
This works fine in XP with the same version of Java
java version "1.6.0_01"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_01-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0_01-b06, mixed mode, sharing)
I still have a lot of the old b## versions in their original ZIP files, so I started working my way backwards. The applicaiton works fine in B17, but anything after that shows this behavior.
I have yet to let it get to the top to see if it will even work after it is done building the window. That woudl be like an hour wait.

I think this is probably because in one of the betas, I started forcing Java2D to use OpenGL for acceleration of slideshow transitions. I've removed that from the latest beta because of reports similar to yours and driver crashes on one of my machines.
