Gallery version (not just "2"): 2.1 to 2.2.4
PHP version (e.g. 5.1.6): 4.4.7
PHPInfo Link (see FAQ): Not possible, currently on virtual host. If wanted put www.rensites.com in your hosts file pointed to 74.208.83.28 and then use http://www.rensites.com/phpinfo.php
Webserver (e.g. Apache 1.3.33): Apache/1.3.33
Database (e.g. MySql 5.0.32): MySQL 4.0.25
Activated toolkits (e.g. NetPbm, GD): NetPBM
Operating system (e.g. Linux): Linux
Browser (e.g. Firefox 2.0): Firefox 2.0

Trying to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2.4. I backed up everything, then ran the upgrade process. I don't get a single error, it just times out on "Updating panorama items" during the core upgrade, and that's it. No debugging output, nada. It just seems to loose the server connection. After hitting "Upgrade Core" again and then click Being it just acts like it's going to update then again, timeout. No debugging output either. Even when I enable debugging in the config.php file I still get nada. So I'm pretty much stumped, as I have nothing to troubleshoot with! :-(

> is there a way to do any upgrade from the command line,

no, there isn't.

to diagnose the problem, see:
1. upgrade log, located in your g2data folder.
2. server error log: FAQ: What is the webserver error log?
