no thumbnails when creating test album

I am currently in the process of migrating to G2 from G1 based on the post: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:migration. On step #14, it tells me to verify that the images have uploaded correctly and that thumbnails were created. I had no problem uploading images to the test album. However,it tells me no thumbnails on the far top left when creating a test album. I have done everything in steps 1-13 including installing netpbm without any problems. What I am missing here? I do not want to migrate my albums until I am able to see that thumbnails were created according to the instructions.
