Gallery version (not just "2"):2.2.5
PHP version (e.g. 5.1.6): 5.4
Webserver (e.g. Apache 1.3.33): Abyss 2X
Database (e.g. MySql 5.0.32): 5.0
Activated toolkits (e.g. NetPbm, GD):GD, netpbm, ffmpeg
Operating system (e.g. Linux): xp sp2
Gallery Remote: 1.5

for reference:
current max file size = 800 megs
current max upload size = 800 megs

Ever since I started using GR i have never been able to upload files larger then 15 megs with it.

All it does is sites on "Preparing To Upload" for as long as I let it and never beings the upload.

now before certain people say it, i have in fact, contrary to popular belief, changed my max upload/file settings to 800 megs.

I can confirm that this has been an issue for years. Though I have found that my limit is between 48-50MB for both GR and the Upload Applet. These utilities are powerful for uploading images, but not videos of any considerable size.

I submitted an email to the Fall Usability Project in regards to GR and Upload Applet and how the usability is limited. I would prefer some sort of AJAX solution that has unlimited file size upload capability combined with the upload feedback information that GR and the Upload Applet offer. Java is slow to boot up and the Upload Applet requires Certificate Authorization. I am not fond of the windows 95 icons and the inconsistency of the Upload Applet interface in various browsers. They should also change the infamous "add & upload pictures" to "add media" or "add content".

I've been thinking that this upload limitation is a Java related since we've adjusted server and gallery size limits. Currently users can upload files up to 320MB. The only way to get these files up there, is to use "From Web Browser", or "From Local Server". We have added the YAHOO.widget.Panel to our "From Web Browser" since it does offer some process feedback. Though "From Web Browser" doesn't offer drag and drop capability, or multiple file selection as the upload applet does.

Since the upload applet is very common utility or method for uploading –whether by members or admins, I would hope that some thought is given to a new simple upload utility that offers "multiple file selection" to the OS file browser along with detailed upload feedback for transfers. Combine that with no file size limit for uploads, and I'd call this solved.

We are finishing up some touches on the new Transcode Module for Gallery. We plan on having an a new release in the coming days. This module combined with FFmpeg offers features found in many desktop encoding applications. This will increase the need for an easy way to upload large video files for server-side transcoding. This file size issue needs to be solved for many who have libraries of videos they wish to place in a Gallery installation.

I really see the value of having Java as the platform for distribution for GR and functionality of the Upload Applet. If you are looking on some direction on fantastic usability and a desktop-centric experience with content management, I urge you to review and watch the video @ getdropbox.com

Sorry for the rant, I know you all are working hard on GR. This file limitation has been a sore spot with me for a while. Guess I should said something sooner.
