Upload without applet

I have been asked to take on the website of a photographic club which has members across the country. I have some ideas of my own on how I would like the body of the site to look and function.

One of the suggested requirements though is that there is an area for members (a couple of hundred) to display their images for review and comment. However, I would like the members to be able to do this themselves as I will not have the time to do this for them. Obviously, something like Flickr would be the type of thing to use as it's quite easy to upload images. I feel that something a little more 'professional' would be required. I have recently been pointed to 'Gallery'.

The one thing that I'm not keen on though is that you have to download and applet of some kind if you wish to publish. Some of our members are not that IT literate and so I would want to keep it as simple as possible. Sites like Flickr and pBase just require a browser and no applets. Is there any development happening which would mean that downloads apps afre not required?

Any help, advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Default, "out of the box" Gallery only does uploads via a web interface, not the upload applet. To use the upload applet you have to install and activate additional plugins, namely the remote plugin.

Log into your Gallery, click Add Items and viola, upload images via the web browser.
