Hi all i wonder if you can help me out to decided if gallery 2 or 3 is right for me and my needs.

Im a freelance photographer (just started hence freelance not emplyed) and im looking to make a website to display my photographs as a portfolio but with a extra features.

Im looking for a website where i can have pages with about me text and contact for etc but also has a photo gallery displaying photos i have taken. simple enough so far....but i would also like the following....

i need my photos to be automatically scaled to the website so i can upload hi res and then they auto scaled to 400 (or simular) for on the site

i need my photos water marked automatically to stop screen prints or right click and saving image

i would like the ability so people can purchase my photographs in a range of sizes from small (for facebook), medium (for 6x4 print), large (300dpi for newspapers etc) when purchases and paid via paypal the image is downloadable.

Is this possible with gallery 2 or 3???

i have basic php skills and i know html and CSS, thank for the support

Well you can't stop people printing or right-clicking, but you can watermark so that will hopefully discourage people. There are right-click disabling hacks, but all someone has to do is view the page source, use any browser that's not IE, etc to get around that. If I can see your picture I can get it, period.

Everything you ask about except the purchasing in different sizes (I'm pretty sure) can be done in G2. G3 has a ways to go to get that far. And as for purchasing in different sizes (if it works the way I think it does) you could work around that by uploading the same picture in different sizes. Yes, you'd need to resize before hand because I believe that the shopping cart features give the person the ability to buy the largest size image they have access to.

Actually, yes you can do that too, without resizing beforehand.

The checkoutdownload module resizes on-the-fly according to whichever size is set as the download for a particular product, so you can have 600 pixel downloads, 1200 pixel downloads and (say) 3600 pixel downloads all linked to different products at different prices and produced automatically for any Gallery image without the need for any resizes to be stored within Gallery. Presto-hey.

Clearly you'd have to use the checkout cart system and not the 'cart' module included with the Gallery core distribution.

I think you're right about the 'cart' module though, it doesn't resize for you.

I think that's what I was thinking about. The cart and zip download module are the only "cart/checkout" module I've used and IIRC, the cart module grabs the largest sized file available to the visitor.

ive tried the gallery2 to zencart link mod but this didn't work correct for how i neeeded it and didn't add a buy button to the gallery2 image display page.

i did a search for download after purchase but never saw thecheckoutdownload mod. ill have to look at that and test it. Gallery 2 seems to be a very nice and easy to use gallery system so far. Water marking is what i ment to help stop people downloading the image without paying as i dont mind people viewing oviousl and most images ill be giving away for free anyhow but would like the option to sell the photos.

Can i give images away for free download if they remain watermarked??? yes i understand photoshop may remove the watermark.

so ill need gallery2, checkoutdownload mod, and checkout cart mod?? i did see a feu checkout mods can anyone point me in the right direction of the one ill need please???

if i manage to get this working ill write a tuorial on this and post this as it seems to be a common asked question.

Well, for a start, have you put some products in the product table? It's rather hard to help you unless you say what steps you've taken.
