Bulk upload with destination albums reflecting the dates of the images - possible?

I want to be able to upload large numbers of images from my camera (or from flash memory) to gallery albums which would be named simply for the date when the picture was taken. I.e. if I have a number of pictures taken on 13th November 2002 I want them to upload to an album ...../2002/11/13, ideally I'd want any EXIF or other data shown with the picture as well but that's more of a 'nice to have'.

Can Gallery2 (or maybe Gallery3, I'm happy to try that) do this, or is there a plugin that would do it for me? Or, if there's nothing ready made, is there a programming
interface that would allow me to write my own script to do it (I can program in Python or PHP)?
