v1.0 uploads don't appear on server

I'm running gallery 1.31 on postnuke 7.21 on Mandrak 8.2

When I upload a file to the gallery it doesn't appear in the gallery. However, a file called aaa.tumb.jpg with length 0 does appear. For each file uploaded a file xxx.tumb.jpg with nothing in appears, however no other files appear. The relevent portion of my log is:
